Why You Shouldn't Put off Your Annual AC Inspection

4 Reasons Your Air Conditioner Is Performing Poorly

With the summer season in top gear, you will need a functional AC to beat the heat. An underperforming AC can cause an unbearable and unpleasant indoor atmosphere on a swelteringly hot day. Furthermore, an AC that is straining to perform its cooling functions will cause your utility bills to skyrocket. For these reasons, it's advisable to service your system and have the malfunctions addressed in time. This guide shares a few causes of underperformance in a cooling system.

Low Refrigerant Levels

A deficiency in refrigerant charge often leads to low cooling capability. Usually, the refrigerant circulates in a loop, absorbing heat from the air in the evaporator coils and expelling it outdoors. If the lines carrying the coolant develop a leak, it will gradually deplete, impeding the heat transfer process. This results in lower cooling output. In this case, your AC specialist must patch the leaks and regas your unit for sufficient charge.

Leaky Ductwork

The work of the appliance's duct system is to supply cool air throughout your house and also to channel warm air back into the air handler for cooling. If there are constant pressure fluctuations in the ducts, they will expand and repeatedly contract, causing small holes and cracks. Moreover, the ducts may become damaged and leak air due to the house's foundation settling as a result of an earthquake or tremor destabilizing the soil beneath. Since a leak in the ducts creates negative pressure and draws outside air into the room, you should engage an AC professional as soon as you notice the problem. They will insulate the ducts and seal the leaks to avert the danger of back drafting.

Old Age of the System

The standard lifespan of every AC unit is imprinted on a tag beside the unit. Although regular preventative maintenance can help extend the system's lifespan, most parts will wear out and malfunction when the unit exceeds the specified lifespan. Naturally, age-related deterioration degrades the system's performance and efficiency, spiking energy bills and increasing repair costs due to frequent breakdowns. When you experience these issues, you can perform repairs by replacing malfunctioning parts with newer and improved versions. You can discuss a replacement plan with your AC specialist if AC repairs are inadequate.

Defective Blower Fan

A blower fan runs at a specific speed to circulate air throughout the rooms in your home. However, if the fan's motor bearings are shot, the fan will not power up to the right speed required to cool your home. In addition, if the fan is not optimized, it may run at lower speeds, resulting in reduced airflow. Your AC specialist will fine-tune the fan's speed to enhance efficiency.

A well-serviced AC will provide optimum temperatures without consuming much energy. Therefore, you should hire an AC repair expert to regularly tune up your system and repair underlying problems causing the system's underperformance.

About Me

Why You Shouldn't Put off Your Annual AC Inspection

I almost always have my air conditioner inspected every spring before I start using it in the summer. However, last year I decided to skip the inspection. Everything had been OK for the last couple of years, so I assumed that it would be fine this year as well. Why not save a few dollars and skip the annual check up, just this once? Of course, this was the year that my air conditioner decided to break down. It ran for a few days, but it never really seemed to get cool enough to bring the indoor temperature down. Then it started making a loud noise, right before shutting off completely. By that time, the AC repair company was swamped like it always is when the weather is warm, and I had to wait days for an appointment. Next year, I will definitely be getting that yearly inspection first.
