Why You Shouldn't Put off Your Annual AC Inspection

5 Common Air Conditioning Problems and How to Troubleshoot Them

Air conditioning is a vital part of our daily lives, especially during hot summer months. However, just like any other mechanical system, air conditioners are prone to encountering problems. By understanding these problems and their potential solutions, you can save time and money by avoiding unnecessary HVAC contractor visits.

Insufficient Cooling

If you notice that your air conditioner is not cooling your space efficiently, there could be a variety of reasons. One common culprit is a clogged air filter. Clean or replace the filter regularly to promote proper airflow. Another cause could be a refrigerant leak, which requires professional attention to fix. Additionally, ensure that there are no obstructions around the outdoor unit and check if the thermostat is set correctly.

Air Conditioner Not Turning On

If your air conditioner fails to turn on, there are a few troubleshooting steps you can take before calling a professional. First, check if the unit has power by ensuring that it is plugged in and the circuit breaker is not tripped. If the power source is fine, inspect the thermostat settings and ensure the temperature is set below the current room temperature. If these steps do not resolve the issue, it may be time to contact an HVAC contractor.

Uneven Cooling throughout the Space

If you experience uneven cooling in different areas of your home, it may indicate issues with airflow distribution. Start by checking if any obstructions are blocking the vents or registers. Ensure that all vents are open and not obstructed by furniture or other objects. It is also worth checking if your air ducts have any leaks or damages, as this can affect proper air distribution. Professional duct inspection and sealing may be necessary to resolve this problem.

Constant Cycling On and Off

Air conditioners should cycle on and off periodically to maintain a comfortable temperature. However, if you notice that your unit is frequently cycling on and off within a short period, it could indicate an underlying issue. One possible cause is a dirty or malfunctioning condenser coil. Clean the coil and ensure that it is free of debris. If the problem persists, it is advisable to seek assistance from an HVAC professional.

Strange Noises or Odors

Knocking or rattling sounds may indicate loose or broken components inside the unit. Musty or pungent odors might suggest the presence of mold or a dirty air filter. Addressing these issues promptly can prevent further damage to your air conditioning system and help maintain a healthier indoor environment.

Regular air conditioning maintenance is crucial for keeping your system running smoothly and avoiding potential problems. By knowing how to troubleshoot common issues like insufficient cooling, failure to turn on, uneven cooling, constant cycling, and strange noises or odors, you can save money on unnecessary HVAC contractor visits. However, if you are unable to resolve the problem yourself or if the issue persists, it is always recommended to seek professional assistance.

About Me

Why You Shouldn't Put off Your Annual AC Inspection

I almost always have my air conditioner inspected every spring before I start using it in the summer. However, last year I decided to skip the inspection. Everything had been OK for the last couple of years, so I assumed that it would be fine this year as well. Why not save a few dollars and skip the annual check up, just this once? Of course, this was the year that my air conditioner decided to break down. It ran for a few days, but it never really seemed to get cool enough to bring the indoor temperature down. Then it started making a loud noise, right before shutting off completely. By that time, the AC repair company was swamped like it always is when the weather is warm, and I had to wait days for an appointment. Next year, I will definitely be getting that yearly inspection first.
