Why You Shouldn't Put off Your Annual AC Inspection

4 Signs That Air Ducts Will Need Cleaning

Most people do not think about the state of their air ducts as long the home is comfortable. Unfortunately, you should know that these are crucial parts of the air conditioning system that will likely develop problems without you noticing. Moreover, once they do, the efficiency with which your unit cools air decreases, forcing it to run longer hours. Fortunately, you can tell when the ducts are developing issues and repair them quickly. Here are some signs that your air ducts might need cleaning.

You Have Mold and Mildew

Mold has a characteristic musty smell, and you cannot miss it. It is also often grey or black, and you can notice the stains on the grill and other duct openings. Note that as the mold spores increase inside your home, you might also see an increasing number of allergies among your family members. If this is the case, get a professional to clean the moldy duct system because it is a health hazard to everyone in your home.

When the Grills are Dusty

The grill acts as a window into the air ducts. Moreover, it is the opening through which the air conditioner blows hot and cold air into the house. You should know that dust on the grills is a common telltale sign that a lot more has accumulated inside the system. In addition, it indicates the air getting blown inside the ducts is dusty, which is why some of the particles stick to the metallic part. While you can wipe down minor traces of dirt on the grill, you should schedule a thorough clean-up to remove the significant volume of grime inside the system. Also, given that dust is recurring, schedule a routine cleaning with professionals for the ideal outcome.

Your Energy Bill Keeps Going Up

You should constantly assess your home's heating bill. Ultimately, if it has increased in the past few months, but you haven't invested in a new appliance, it is time to check the state of the ducts. Note that when the ducts are full of debris, they cannot push air into and out of the home as needed. Hence, the entire system works harder, and electricity consumption goes up.

You Have Rodents and Insects

Rodents, insects, and other vermin are common in places with poor hygiene. As such, dirty air ducts form the perfect hiding place for all manner of pests. On the other hand, cleaning them will discourage the pests from occupying and reproducing. This way, you will deal with minimal damage or repairs.

These are a few signs that your air conditioning system ducts need cleaning. Speak to a local HVAC service to clean up your ducts for better efficiency.

About Me

Why You Shouldn't Put off Your Annual AC Inspection

I almost always have my air conditioner inspected every spring before I start using it in the summer. However, last year I decided to skip the inspection. Everything had been OK for the last couple of years, so I assumed that it would be fine this year as well. Why not save a few dollars and skip the annual check up, just this once? Of course, this was the year that my air conditioner decided to break down. It ran for a few days, but it never really seemed to get cool enough to bring the indoor temperature down. Then it started making a loud noise, right before shutting off completely. By that time, the AC repair company was swamped like it always is when the weather is warm, and I had to wait days for an appointment. Next year, I will definitely be getting that yearly inspection first.
